Poems inspired by paintings or paintings inspired by poems...

No Exit

If I could hide behind stained glass windows
it'd reveal who I am,
or at least distort who I am not.
If I could hide behind stained glass windows
I'd become saintly,
wouldn't I?
Or I'd become that as a Picasso painting,
a delightful distortion to the viewer's eye.
Note: There is a stained glass window in this painting but is now hidden under many layers of paint. See older posts of "No Exit" for stages of this painting. (Post titled, "Painting Layers and Layers and Layers" on Tuesday, December 27th, 2011.)

Poems inspired by paintings or paintings inspired by poems......

And If I could slip out the bedroom window,
onto the roof,
into the pine trees just beyond,
And slip into the branches to lay within their power,
I'd think I was safe,
out beyond,
above it all.
I'd talk to the squirrels and lay monthly eggs.

Seth Apter's Book and Call for Artist's Project

Seth Apter is a highly respected artist/blogger in hte mixed media world. "The Pulse of Mixed Media: Secrets and Passions of 100 Artists Revealed" is the title of Seth Apter's book out on the shelves now. It is causing quite a buzz in the creative community. If you haven't visited Seth's blog, jump on over there now.

His blog and his book focus on community. (He often does joint projects with other artists.) To help celebrate the book tour Seth has announced an open call to artists. He has invited artists to participate in an online project similar to that in the book. In the book he asked the artists many questions they had to answer in words and/or prompts through their art. He is doing a version of this online. Artists are to answer 1, 2, or all 3 questions with words on a 5"x5" square. Since we are artists, hey, we can make it a visual delight.

I'm in. I created three pieces using 140lb watercolor paper. I answered all 3 questions and will be mailing my artwork to him tomorrow. See the following post to view my art and read the answers to the questions.

The questions are:
1. The Artistic Ingredient: If your artwork could talk, what would it say?
2. Passion in Action: Who has the most impact on your creative life?
3. Secrets Revealed: What is one thing you have never shared with the creative community?

"The Pulse of Mixed Media: Secrets and Passions of 100 Artists Revealed" by Seth Apter

1. The Artistic Ingredient: If your artwork could talk, what would it say?
Go ahead and jump down the rabbit hole.

2. Passion in Action: Who has the most impact on your creative life?
Gary Reef. He inspired me to create without fear. To paint beyond those boundaries I had set up.

3. Secrets Revealed: What is one thing you have never shared with the creative community?
I let unfinished paintings sit for years because I held back the passion & emotion that needed expressed on the canvas.

Day Trip in Columbus Ohio

Everyone who knows us knows we RARELY have a day together. Yesterday we shared an ENTIRE day trip together in  Columbus. Too long driving back and forth on the freeway.....saw Cleveland Avenue too many times (not intentionally).....favorite restaurant closed down.......need food and iced tea really bad. Stopped at the Polaris mall just because I never shop except for at bookstores, and flea markets, or art know thought I'd give it a go again.......UGh!! Who likes that caged in atmosphere at the mall? If I won the lottery and could buy a new wardrobe (I need one) I'd hire my daughters to go shop for me.

This is the look pasted on Gary's face when we realized we were on Cleveland Avenue (again) and going the wrong way. I laugh hysterically. He stone faces it up.
Found a wonderful store called Columbus Architectural Salvage and an Italian bakery, both of them side by side and tucked behind an alley off of 11th avenue. Had a cannolli that was divine and bought some metal stencils and old salvaged wood to do plaster and wax work on. The most interesting places are tucked away like this and it is such a surprise when you find them (rather than those monster malls popping up everywhere.) Do you know they had valet parking at the mall? WHY?

Note: Arrow pointing to my mouth says "Gold tooth for sale" and "Lipstick applied in moving car."

Hugs and good wishes for more day trips,

Painted Hand

I use brushes to paint but I love to swish the paint on the canvas with my fingers and hand. There is an explosion painting like this.

My philosophy: Work intuitively with emotion and passion. Go so deep into it that you feel like you're chasing after yourself while you paint.

Painting and Art Assemblage

Hmmmm, nothing like cat hair in a painting. This is Loki, my daughter's cat. She has recently moved so I have to go out to visit him. When I visit he likes to get up on my shoulders so he can snuggle in my hair. I can carry him around like that while he sleeps. He is a huge baby and needs a lot of attention. I miss him in my studio. Often he would just watch me paint.

The bottom photo is an art assemblage piece I've been trying to finish since last summer. Not that I don't know how to proceed, I just keep putting other projects ahead of it. Plus, I need to order apoxie clay. I've taken two online classes with Michael DeMeng and I hope to take a live workshop with him this summer, so I'd better get to practicing.

Finished! "She Forgot She Can't Remember"

This is a large canvas painting. I used Golden Fluid acrylics, oil pastel, acrylic inks and paper ephemera. It is always so exciting to complete a painting and a bit hard to stop the process; although I will start another one tonight.

"She Forgot She Can't Remember" painting in process

I added underwriting using my poetry and verse. Then I added a mixture of water, glazing solution, and gesso over the writing and added color from there. I will most likely finish this painting this weekend. You might like to look at previous postings of this painting (Feb 15 and 16) to see what it looked like when I first started it. I love to take photos as I work, otherwise I tend to forget all the transformations my paintings go through.

53 ATC Inspirational Card Deck

Finished! These will go out snail mail today. I kind of hate to see them go. But it is important to me to send art out into the world. Plus a new deck will be returned to me which will include the work of 52 different artists. Wow! Think about having that kind of energy in your house. Lovely.

43 ATC cards completed

I need to make 11 more cards and I'm running out of time. I love drawing these faces and characters. Having so much fun with the characters I don't want to send them out into the world. But releasing art so others can enjoy is a new phase for me this year.
