Altered Books with Plaster of Paris

With this book cut out arch in the cover and adhere the doll to the first prpared page.

It is optional whether you cover the front and the back covers with plaster. You can simply cover the front.

In this book design I cut the arch shape in the cover of the book and also through layers of the book pages. I cut a horizontal bar to serve as a shrine to hold trinkets.

Work the clay to warm in your hands. Make a ball. Rub a bit of baby powder on doll.

Press clay to flatten to length of doll.

Work the clay up around the doll to build a wall.

Remove doll from the mold. Allow the mold to dry.

Mix up plaster of paris to fill the mold. Let it set.

Use a utility knife to cut out the arch and horizontal bar shapes.

Cover the book cover with two coats of Gesso. Sand lightly when dry.

Mix up a new batch of plaster.

Spread the plaster with your fingers on the covers. Can only do the front cover if you prefer.

I used Gesso mixed with Teal to tone it down. Then add Green Gold, then Qinac Azo Gold, then Light Burnt Umber.

Use your fingers to paint on a color then wipe with a damp cloth...add next color and wipe. Proceed until you've used the color combinations you want.

The gold is added for accent along ridges or white patches.

Brush on a layer of W&N India Ink in Sunshine Yellow to age the cover.

Choose a book page or your own painted paper to glue into the arch window.

This paper will peek through your arch window.

Glue the doll and trinkets in place. I used YES Paste. Make sure you sealed your doll with gel medium.

Place wax seal into position. Choose a metal stamp.

Heat seal with glue gun and press metal stamp into melted wax.

Use Distress Ink-antique linen- to age the printed page. First apply and wipe gesso. Let dry then rub ink on with fingers. Add abit of light burnt umber to the edges and across the wax seal.

Plaster of Paris, Joint Compound, Plaster Gauze...endless possibilities with these mediums and Stephanie Lee and Judy Wise have a wonderful book on the subject titled, "Plaster Studio, Mixed-Media Techniques for Painting, Casting and Sculpting," published by North Light Books.

I made this NICHO JOURNAL designed by Judy Wise. Judy says in her book, "One of my favorite uses for these little recycled books is to house my painting-a-day works. Each book becomes a tiny, irreplaceable treasure."

I'm very excited about this handmade journal. The cover is one of those boxes Northlight or Amazon sends book purchase in through the mail. Traci Bautista in her DWELL workshop first inspired me to use post office box mailers for book covers.I cut off the extra piece of cardboard then gessoed it. I could've painted directly on the box but I used a 22x32 piece of cold pressed watercolor paper and painted on that. I used Liquitex, Golden and GELATOS (those creamy can see some results in the circle designs). I cut the paper to fit the cover and used gel medium to adhere it. Two stacks of 3 signatures are inside. One set on the left and one on the right.

I have had many new creative ideas come out of participating in CREATIVE JUMPSTART:



Painted box a base color. Dry. Rub a candle over the paint. Lightly sandpaper it. Add a second color of paint. Learned this first part of the project in Creative Jumpstart. Go to 

I used Kroma Crackle for the snake skin effects although I used Michael DeMeng's recipe for this that I learned in one of his on-line classes.

Air-Dry clay to make the snake from an old Mattel Creepy Crawly Metal Plate. Painted the snake. Added beads for eyes.
