I took my first writing workshop with author Wade Rouse. It was a writing retreat held at a lovely country bed and breakfast in Granville, Ohio. Part of the writing retreat focused on participants reading aloud from their novels. I read a chapter from my book, "No Bra, No Teeth, No Service" which is a humorous memoir based on my job as a convenience store clerk while balancing the creative life. I'll never forget hearing the laughter from Wade and the other participants. (Oh so this is funny to other people and not just in my own head.) I showed illustrations to compliment my book. Wade was very excited about my work. His immediate reaction was to write this as a graphic novel. And he was right. I left that retreat knowing I had purpose for writing and drawing. He was the single force who gave me the courage to continue with this work.

I knew Wade Rouse previously through his books. I found a book of his while browsing a small college bookstore, "At Least in the City Someone Would Hear me Scream." I started to read it and found myself laughing out loud in the store. I sat down in an over stuffed chair near the window with the sun warming my back and read a chapter. Then I read the next. I laughed so hard people started to stare. I read the entire book there that day. Purchased it. Hurried home and got on the computer to get the titles of his other books

America's Boy
It's All Relative
Confessions of a Prep School Mommy Handler

Currently Wade is writing his heirloom novels under the pen name Viola Shipman
Wade is an award-winning memoirist. He chose his grandmother's name, Viola Shipman, to honor the woman whose stories inspired him to write these novels. The first in the heirloom novels is, "The Charm Bracelet" and the second is to be released March 21st, "The Hope Chest."  A third novel will be released in 2018.

I hope you will read Wade Rouse and Viola Shipman. If you belong to a book club the heirloom novels would be excellent choices. Perfect gifts for sisters, mothers and dear friends. The Charm Bracelet was only 700 copies away from being on the New York Times Bestseller list. I'd love to see The Hope Chest make it to this list. Don't wait. Buy a copy now.
